ABOUT ME

Gitika Buttoo is a critically acclaimed, award-winning director working across theatre, film, and audio, with work presented nationally and internationally.


Her debut short film Before I Do was commissioned by the British Film Institute and has been selected by BFI Flare Film Festival (Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ film festival), among others internationally. Gitika was also selected by Film Hub North and SISTER to shadow as a director on the BBC series The Split Up, where she shadowed on a full production block and edit.


In theatre, Gitika’s recent work has received significant critical recognition. Through It All Together (Leeds Playhouse) was nominated for Best New Play and Best Regional Production at the What’s On Stage Awards, while Period Party by Gayathiri Kamalakanthan (Soho Theatre) was an OffWestEnd Awards (Offies) Choice Winner and nominated for Best Ensemble.


Gitika trained on the Directors Course at the National Theatre Studio and has worked at the National Theatre as a Resident Staff Director. She will return to the National in 2026 as an Associate Director on a Lyttelton production with Indhu Rubasingham. She has previously been appointed Regional Associate at Tamasha Theatre Company, Associate Director at LUNG Theatre Company, and was selected as one of Headlong Theatre’s Origins Directors.


Her work has won Best Online Audio Production at the OffWestEnd Awards, and her production of Tanika Gupta’s Love N Stuff was nominated for Best Stage Production at the Asian Media Awards.


Recent theatre credits include: Period Party (Soho Theatre); Through It All Together (Leeds Playhouse); Tell Me How It Ends (Liverpool Everyman Theatre); ROAD (Oldham Coliseum); The Father and the Assassin (National Theatre); Love N Stuff (Oldham Coliseum, Watford Palace & Sheffield Theatres); and The Jungle Book (Storyhouse Theatre, Chester).
